We used to frequent Canas y Tapas a lot, when it first opened, especially when Gabrial the Spanish waiter used to work there about one and a half years ago! He was great, very chatty and friendly. Since he has left they have employed some 'Russian' looking waiter who is so miserable and rude it's unbelievable. I've had the misfortune to be 'served' by him. He seems a bit short of hearing as you have to repeat yourself to him all the time, its asif he takes pleasure in causing you the most inconvenience possible. I don't know if he does this on purpose but it seems that way.
Anyway, here is a list of dislikes and can I say at this stage don't bother for the positive points, there aren't any! The food is rubbish, smallest portions ever. Tapas, ha! ha! they are so small its unbelievable. I've been to Spain four times in the last 12 months and the tapas over there are large in comparison and delicious. The worst thing I say about Canas y Tapas in Leicester is the service, its just the worst I've ever experienced. The waiters look bloody miserable. When there are a few people at the bar, not now but in the early days when people actually used to come here, you've got to fend for yourself as the bar staff don't seem to make a mental note of who arrived first, its dog eat dog at the bar if you want the attention of the bar staff. They say 'free tapas' with a drink but most of the time will not serve any free tapas and you have to ask for it yourself. Beer is served warm, Arrrgh! Disgusting! So I wouldn't even recommend Canas for a drink. The last time I was there the coffee machine had failed. It was 1pm and they still hadn't fixed or replaced the coffee machine. I had to have the Slavic Russian to make me a Nescafe and guess what? I had to wait 20 minutes for this coffee as he had forgotten about it(!?)
I'm a Spaniard myself (half) and if you want real Spanish food that's very good visit the Barceloneta on Queens Road. Who ever manages this places take the responsibility to recruit the proper staff, staff who enjoy working with people/customers. Management are to blame here. When I say the management I mean the manager who runs the bar in Leicester period! Avoid the miserable waiters, below average food, stupidly high prices and warm beer at the Canas!
